Govt saves $4.5m from internet filter

The government is saving $4.5 million by not proceeding with plans to filter the internet of objectionable material. Internet service providers will still have to block access to child abuse websites on an Interpol list.

In a move to enhance cyber security, the government is pushing head with establishing the new Australian Cyber Security Centre, a measure launched by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in January.

This will be a multi-agency body combining cyber security capabilities from Defence, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, Australian Federal Police, Attorney General’s Department and the Australian Crime Commission in one location.

Budget papers don’t indicate funding for this body as its costs will be met from within resources of participating agencies.
